Weigh Bridge – In Ground and Above Ground
When it comes to weigh bridges, whether they are installed in-ground or above ground, the foundations play a vital role in their overall performance. It is essential to ensure that the foundations are properly constructed to maintain the accuracy and stability of the weighbridge.
For in-ground weighbridges, it is crucial to have level and stable foundations. Any unevenness or instability in the foundation can affect the accuracy of the weighbridge readings. Additionally, proper drainage is essential to prevent flooding in the weighbridge pit, which could lead to malfunctions and damage.
To enhance the performance and longevity of the weighbridge, a ‘T’ section rubber strip is fitted between the weighbridge deck and the edge of the foundations. This rubber strip serves multiple purposes. It limits deck movement without compromising the weighbridge’s accuracy and performance. It also acts as a barrier, preventing debris from entering the weighbridge pit, which can cause damage or interfere with the weighing process.
At ScaleLogic, we understand the importance of solid foundations for weighbridges. Whether you choose an in-ground or above-ground installation, we ensure that the foundations are properly designed and constructed to provide stability, accuracy, and durability for your weighbridge. Our expertise and attention to detail guarantee that your weighbridge will perform optimally, giving you reliable and precise weighing results.
Details
In-Ground | Above-Ground | |
Cost | More expensive due to additional construction work required | Less expensive due to less construction work |
Service and scale repairs | In some cases, more costly due to confined area restrictions | Less difficult or costly and serviced from above |
Clean out | Done manually and very time consuming | Quick and easy, done with a water hose or compressor from the side |
Scale inspection | Must be performed from inside the pit | Can be performed by simply walking around the perimeter of the scale |
Restrictions or hazards | Need access under weighbridge for cleaning and servicing. Must also consider site and OSH regulations regarding confined space etc | Need landing pad/deck for driver and if over certain height |
Approaches | flat and level | 3mtrs flat and level |
Ramps | None | Typically 5mtrs long on each end of the ramp. Requires more land to install and operate |
Electricity needed | Must have electricity for pit lights and sump pump if no gravity drain is present | None |
In-Ground mounted
In-Ground mounted weighbridges are flush with the ground. As a result they pose no restrictions to vehicle and person
movement and are therefore particularly useful at sites where vehicle flow can be in multiple directions.
Most mechanical weighbridges were installed in pits to accommodate the lever assemblies so when they
are upgraded or replaced, new bespoke size pit mounted steel weighbridge decks and load cells provide
a very cost effective answer. ScaleLogic can and have designed special mounting assemblies to facilitate the use of
existing pits, ensuring the new decks sit level with the surface. This approach removes the need for costly
and disruptive foundation changes.
Benefits/Advantages:
- Great for small sites.
- Perfect for busy sites with lots of traffic.
- Perfect for split-weighing
- Trip hazards to minimum
- Loadcells not exposed so potentially less damage to cabling etc from rodents.
Disadvantages:
- More site works required
- Drainage required
- Most expensive type of installation
- Potentially limited access for servicing due to OSH requirements – confined space etc.
Above-Ground mounted
Above-Ground weighbridges offer straightforward installation and the optional side frames help to guide
vehicles centrally through the bridge. Approach and departure ramps can either be of steel construction, wooden or
pre-cast in concrete on-site. Removable steel ramps have the advantage of being able to be
moved with the bridge if relocation is required, leaving the site level.
Benefits/Advantages:
- Least expensive option.
- Least site preparation required before construction.
- Most common type of weighbridge supplied & installed.
- Easy to clean and inspect.
- Requires minimal drainage or in most cases not required at all.
Disadvantages:
- Requires the largest site footprint of all the options – Having 5m long Ramps at either end, or in some cases even longer ramps if the ground slopes away from the weighbridge.
- Depending on location and height may require landing deck for truck drivers to exit and enter vehicle.
- Split-weighing difficult and costly as need flat area after weighbridge for truck to sit on as trailer is weighed.
